Check out NorthernTool. They sell a lock set (Item# 125580), from DeadBolt
that includes a hitch lock and a trailer pin lock. The pin lock fits PERFECTLY in the spare tire mount hole. The lock twists in from behind while you hold the key and provides a snug fit. Between this lock and the locking lug, I doubt it will be easy to jack the spare.

Here's a couple of pics:

that's very cool! isn't the spare carrier just mounted to the truck with a few bolts though?

Yeah, but I still dont think it would be all that easy to get at them without the tire off. If they want it that bad, they'll probably find a way, but by then they'll have a Sig pointed at their head with me behind the trigger! LOL View attachment Gunner.bmp

Be careful not to get the larger diameter like I did. I measured the hole and ordered the larger diameter, it being the same size, see where I'm going with this....yea, I was on the grinder for 15 minutes. But yes, I ordered from the same place and yes, they are very cool.

This is exactly what I was looking for; thanks Trader!
However, before ordering, I want to know which one of the following two would fit on my FJ spare wheel (factory Steel) WITHOUT modifications (grinding).

DeadBolt Spare Tire Lock - Item# 125583 ? OR
Deadbolt Hitch & Coupler Lock Set — Keyed Alike - Item# 125580?

I actually dont need the Hitch lock but I also dont want to GRIND something thats larger in diameter to make it fit.

I would also like to hear from others who own either of these.

Thanks much.

I have the DeadBolt Spare Tire Lock - Item# 125583 and it works fine. I didn't have to grind anything, but did have to slightly enlarge the spare tire mount hole on the FJ. I used a portable drill and a 1/2" bit.

It's easy: the "mod" took all of about 15 seconds, didn't require removing the spare tire and is not at all visible. :)

Thanks for the feedback 23V. That sounds doable. In the meanwhile I also looked up the TRD website for the Wheel Lock Kit (Part Number 00276-42960). The pic shows 5 pieces. However, I dont know how those work; and if they come with a key (although I dont see a lock in the pic).

Does anyone has any idea how the wheel lock kit on the TRD website work?
Or else, am gonna go with 23V's idea, and get the DeadBolt.

I made a lock yesterday unknowing of this thread...lol...oh well. Any type of bolt/cylinder lock is better than the 'key' locks like the Gorilla locks. Although I have the Gorilla locks as well they can be taken off in seconds with a 'reverse out' from Craftsman and or a 17mm socket with a breaker bar tapped on.

I got the spare tire lock from Northern Tool and I am extremely happy with it. Locks very secure, has a plastic cap to help protect lock from rain. Took me all of five minutes to install it. I did use a drill bit to make the mounting hole fit easier, could probably use a file as well. It is just for the piece the wheel mounts to(sticks off rear door), you not drilling any sheet metal or any actual part of your truck itself.

I definitely recommend this lock.

If i may use your picture? I am not quite sure why so many people are adding multiple locks to their wheels when the entire carrier can be removed with four bolts by a socket wrench. Most wheels allow easy access to these bolts.

Why not look at a way of covering these bolts or getting a special style bolt? (and yes, while the wheel will still be locked to the mount, if someone has as much time as they want to remove the wheel in the comfort of their home, it won't take them long.)

Someone had mentioned just spot welding those four nuts . Like you're ever gonna need to take off the spare wheel carrier. I'm sure the average thief is'nt gonna carry round a cutting wheel or grinder. Put a couple of pitbulls in the back and leave your glass open.

It would be tough and time consuming for anyone to remove the tire carrier from my FJ. You can easily reach two of the bolts ,but the other two are unreachable. Tire is too close to the door itself. Besides, you can't stop someone from stealing something, just deter them by making it more difficult. So make it as tough as you can.

After all if they really want it, they can steal the whole FJ and take it to a chop shop. If you make it more difficult, it won't be worth it for one rim.

If they have to go through that much trouble to remove the tire carrier from my FJ, then deal with how to get the northern lock bolt lock off once they get home with spare, hopefully they will move on to a less protected truck. Besides it is a lot of trouble to go through for a factory rim.

I do like the bolt lock better than the locking lug nuts. Anyone who works at a tire shop, dealer or any other auto shop has a set of keys for locking lug nuts. There are only so many designs.

If you are running stock wheels, give me a socket and extension and a wrench and i will have your rear wheel in less that 3 minutes. How do i know? I just tried and could get to all of them on mine. And if i have all the time in the world and whatever tools i want and can make all the noise i want to try and get through whatever lock you have put on their to attach it to the mount, i WILL get it off.

All i am saying is if you are going to the trouble of putting extra locks on the wheel, you should not overlook this area as well.

Just saw this post last Sunday, ordered the DeadBolt lock online immediately, received it on Thursday and in just a minute, my spare tire is locked already...
