I broke my frame!

I know fender rips and tears are all the fad, but how about this... I tore my frame!

Passenger side right next to where the motor mount ties into the frame... hard to see from the pics, but the frame is sheared through such that the motor mount arm thingy is no longer attached to anything...

Toyota refuses to warranty it, but the R&D people want the frame so the entire frame is being replaced at no cost to me.

I'm hoping to get a lot of REALLY cool pics as they perform the labor of replacing the frame... since they'll be ripping the body and drivetrain out. Should be interesting. I'll take requests if anybody wants a picture of anything specific that might be better seen with the body off, etc.

EDIT: There wasn't any one incident that caused this... it happened slowly over the course of about a month and several different trail runs. The symptoms were consistent with a broken motor mount (excessive engine movement). I assumed it was a broken motor mount and took it to the dealership... they called me back with something like 'uhhh, I think you better come take a look at this.'

It occurred slowly over the course of about a month... no one single incident (no dunes jumping of anything like that for me) caused this.

The symptom was excessive motor movement. Under load, the engine would move over so much that the fan would start grinding into the shroud. I brought it in assuming it was a busted motor mount... little did I know!

Yes my child?

Man I took Mike down to the dealership must have been 25 days ago...my old highschool buddy is the service manager there so I figured it would help his case if I went along to catch up with him...the service folks sat around laughing at this situation:lol: no one had ever seen this happen. Mike has more issues than just that also that I hope they take care of...front diff and oil pan is literally dripping:rofl:

Glad they are doing something..I was really hoping they would get you a new truck. I mean the cost of installing the chassis is going to be relative to a new rig...serious man hours:lol: DUR DUR DUR!

Toyota no/R&D yes...I dont get that part.....
I am also confused... but the bottom line for me is OK.

Would have preferred a new truck, but hey... can't get THAT lucky all the time.

Sorry to hear about this happening with an FJC. There have been a number of Tacoma owners that have reported this same issue. Here are a couple of threads that should keep you busy reading. I've always been worried about the motor mounts and have considered adding some steel to them.

The next thread doesn't necessarily pertain to your issue, but is an indication that Toyota was aware of an issue with earlier Toyota truck that could have been related.

My buddy had one from Maine with rust holes through the entire frame...he wheeled the piss out of that rig and never could break it...he had open diffs so you could imagine him slamming on things to get up and over:lol:

Yea.... I think I'm gonna take this solution and run with it. I'd love to argue "with Toyota" about this, but what does that even mean? I'm not a lawyer, would just get lost in the mix of BS...

Much rather keep the problems local with the nice people at the dealership than a faceless company bozo.

It's hard for me to see from the photo, did it break along a weld?

Seems like the motor mount was stronger than the frame in this case.

Wild.

so did it break at the weld or actual metal fatigue?
That's the weird thing... it broke across a flat plane of metal, no weld or anything. Motor mount is in tact, suspension tower parts are in tact, all the welds are still there and look good.... but the frame caved in. Very bizarre!

Hey, Very Happy your getting it fixed free. Nice present. Thought this was going to be a real downer thread. R/D  Did you tell them you only drove it to the store and church?:rofl:. You are now known as Lucky Mad Man Mike.
Wow, Excellent pics too.

Ouch. I hate to see that bill!

Just caught the thread, pretty amazing if you think about it. How it could fatigue/fail there is kind of odd as everyone else has said.

Congrats on the fact that its being fixed, can't imagine how it couldn't be a warranty but who knows how some of those minds think.

In any event, I'd buy a "throw away" digital camera and give it to the tech, asking that they take as many pics as they can along the way. It would be fun to sit and watch the process but I'm sure you have more important things to do. On second thought, it is pretty important but I doubt you could miss that much work...

Glad your getting a new frame bro. Its probably better getting a new frame anyway with all the work and memories you have in your truck.

Wonder if it is possible to galvanize the frame prior to replacement. Wouldn't have any rust issues to worry about in the future.
