Idler Pulley Problem Solved...

While at the RMTP Lobster Run in Maine, I did this...

When I came home my Idler Pulley's were screaming. I read the thread about cleaning the pulleys and followed it...

Then I found these sealed bearings from NAPA

Two upper and one tensioner pulleys

One lower pulley

Sealed front and rear, problem solved. Cleaned and repacked my originals for spares on the road.

OEM Pulley Top Side: (sealed)

OEM Pulley Under Side: (this is where the mud gets in)

Hope this helps.

Hey Dave welcome to the pulley club. I think I hear mine starting to act up again. I just had them replaced a couple months ago. It doesn't take much to make em' start making that raspy, aweful friggin' noise. Should have brought it to the dealer. I have the extended warranty on mine so as long as they'll cover it, they'll do the work. There's no reason for them to fail so pre-maturely. Definitely need a better pulley meant for harsh conditions. It is an offroad vehicle isn't it? Had fun this weekend in Maine. See you soon enough!

Great find, I know sooner or later I will need to replace all the drive belt pulleys.
Napa has always stood behind there parts, they are a little higher than most but there staff and customer service is good IMPO.

I'm glad this post helps. I have to point out one thing I did not mention in my original post... Take note of the bearing insert in the photo above the bearing:

Image

When squeezing your arms around the fan and hoses, it is possible for you to screw the bolt in and the insert comes out, rides on the bolt and you think the bolt is tight. Be sure to visually inspect that the insert is inside the bearing before you tighten it down or you will damage the bearing. I almost made that mistake and caught it at the last moment.

At the angle you are working it is very easy for this to happen and that would spell disaster if you started the engine.

Just an FYI.

Enjoy.

Booked marked! Thanks for finding this out! Just waiting for mines to make noise. Somebody sticky this in the technical area.

I haven't had this problem but I know its only a matter of time. How many of each pulley do we need??

You will need 3 of the upper, this includes the pulley on the tensioner, and one of the lower.

The pulley bolt on the tensioner is left hand thread. Pull the bolt to the left (loose), to release the belt, turn the bolt to the right to loosen the bolt.

The links in my original post go directly to the parts at NAPA. They also have a store locater in the left hand pane, just enter your zip code.

Upper pulleys: NBH36173
Lower pulley: NBH36174

Nice to meet you as well, thanks for the compliment. The whole family has pitched in to make that rig what it is. Our daughter has turned into quite the gear head and is patiently awaiting her first rig for mod.

NAPA only had 2 upper pulleys in stock that day so I replaced two upper pulleys, which incidentally were the ones making the noise. Sounded just like a bad steering pump.

I ordered the third upper, and 1 lower, will be in tomorrow and I am replacing them all.

Taking the old ones and cleaning and repacking for spares on the road, though I doubt I will need them now.

I order 2 of these pulleys last Friday, I only needed one so I bought an extra one to have because they are so cheap. I put the new one in today in less then 15 minutes, very easy to do. I can't believe how quiet the motor is now, I always remember from day one the pulleys making a very faint wine and after a deep puddle a month ago it got real loud. But now their is absolutely no whining noise at all. I highly recommend doing this yourself or just buying an extra idler pulley from napa to have as a back up and stay away from the dealer.

Thanks for this great info

I don't know if it is luck or my method, but my pullies only squeaked once since I bought it 4/06. I cleaned out the mud, and sprayed them with silicone, after each trip I spray them with water and apply silicone each spring, noise free, no matter what I've been through, water holes, mud holes.
